Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the necessity of adhesive application in the cementation of glass ceramics, considering its influence on bond strength and clinical reliability. Methods: This is a systematic review based on the analysis of in vitro laboratory studies, identified through searches in six scientific databases. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, focusing on studies that compared cementation protocols with and without adhesive application after etching with hydrofluoric acid and silane treatment. A total of 18 studies were included in this review. Results: Most studies showed no significant advantage of adhesive application in improving the bond strength between glass ceramics and resin cements. Some studies even reported negative outcomes, such as reduced mechanical performance and load-bearing capacity. The use of hydrofluoric acid followed by silane alone was sufficient to ensure effective and durable adhesion. Final considerations: The application of adhesive is not necessary for the cementation of glass ceramics. The exclusion of this step from the clinical protocol is recommended to streamline procedures, reduce chair time, and maintain high-quality bonding.
