Abstract

Objective: To investigate whether vitamin D deficiency may be associated with the development of postpartum depression, based on available scientific evidence. Methods: Integrative review, carried out in the PUBMED, BVS, SCIELO, MEDLINE and LILACS databases, with the Health Descriptors: “Postpartum Depression” AND “Vitamin D”. After a careful evaluation, 15 articles were selected from the total that comprise this study. Results: The authors address that vitamin D deficiency has a strong connection and is directly linked to postpartum depression, where after categorizing the studies, it was found that 86.6% (n = 13) obtained positive evidence on the subject, highlighting that vitamin D deficiency directly affects the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women. Thus, ensuring adequate levels of vitamin D during pregnancy can be an important preventive strategy, especially for women who are more vulnerable to depression. Final considerations: According to the data presented, it is observed that vitamin D deficiency is a significant risk factor for postpartum depression, but more concise studies are needed to emphasize this study.
