Abstract
Objectives: To analyze cases in which the use of antibiotics is most appropriate for cancer patients; to identify and discuss the main types of drugs used; and to identify the best strategies for optimizing the use of antibiotics in order to increase patient safety. Methods: Observational and cross-sectional study of cancer patients. Microbial analysis was performed in partnership with the hospital's infectious disease team, analyzing cultures. The population consisted of all patients who presented positive cultures for bacteria. Sampling was performed for convenience, according to the culture results. Results: The results of this study demonstrated statistically significant associations (p<0.05) with resistance to the drugs Sulfamethazole + Trimethoprim (SUT), Piperacillin-tazobactam (PTZ), Gentamicin (GT), Ceftazidime (CAZ) related to patient outcomes. Regarding the overall outcome of the patients, 93 patients (73.2%) were discharged from hospital and 34 patients (26.8%) died. The most common malignant neoplasm in this study was colon cancer (15.7%), followed by prostate cancer (15%) and then Hodgkin's lymphoma (12.6%). Conclusion: Merely prescribing, without adequate justification, can lead to greater suffering for the patient, without cure control and inadequate management.
