Abstract

Objective: To describe hospital mortality in the state of Bahia due to complications of medical and surgical care from 2014 to 2023. Methods: Ecological and descriptive study that presents secondary mortality data, through information available in DATASUS. The data were organized in Excel® spreadsheets, grouped by year of care, main complications, macro-regions, and hospitalizations. The analysis used descriptive statistics and the calculation of deaths by health macro-regions was performed based on hospitalizations. Results: A total of 19,615 hospitalizations due to complications of medical and surgical care were observed and of these, a total of 523 deaths were observed in the period analyzed. The most frequent ICD was Y83. The year of care that presented the most complications was 2023, with 97 deaths (18.5%). Thus, the health macroregion with the highest number of deaths was Northern Bahia with 6.3%, highlighting the concentration of specialized health in regional hubs, the scarcity of human and material resources in more remote areas and the difficulty of accessing quality health care in these regions. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of public policies for the adoption of impact and management measures with procedural improvements in order to result in favorable outcomes for Bahia's health.
