Abstract

Objective: To compare the parental goals and strategies for emotion socialization adopted by mothers and fathers in agricultural and fishing-extractive villages in the state of Pará, Brazil. Methods: This is a field study involving 66 caregivers, including mothers and fathers residing in fishing-extractive villages in Bragança-PA and agricultural villages in Castanhal-PA. The instruments used were the Sociodemographic Data Form (SDF) and the Emotion Socialization Goals Questionnaire (ESGQ). Results: In both contexts, the predominant emotion socialization goals belonged to the 'self-maximization' category, as well as practices classified as 'caregiver-centered'. This configuration suggests a balance between fostering emotional autonomy and providing affective support, which may promote the development of socioemotional and self-regulatory skills essential to children's mental health. Conclusion: Thus, it is concluded that caregivers socialize their children within an autonomous-relational self, highlighting a tendency to value autonomy in emotional expression. This pattern reflects social, economic, and cultural changes that distinguish the studied villages from contexts traditionally associated with emotional interdependence.
