Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effects of a 1% Cymbopogon citratus-based cleansing gel on the microhardness and microroughness of acrylic resin after simulated brushing over a five-year period. Methods: This in vitro study used 30 heat-polymerized acrylic resin specimens, randomly divided into three groups (n=10): distilled water (DW), commercial toothpaste Even® (CP), and a 1% C. citratus gel (LG). Brushing simulations were performed to represent 12, 36, and 60 months of clinical use. Microhardness and surface roughness were measured before and after each period. Results: The LG group showed no statistically significant change in microhardness over time (p=0.241), unlike the control groups. Surface roughness remained stable in the LG group, while it increased in the others. Conclusion: The 1% Cymbopogon citratus gel is a safe option for denture hygiene, preserving acrylic resin’s mechanical properties. Its non-abrasive nature makes it suitable for patients with physical limitations, helping to control biofilm without compromising prosthesis integrity.
