Abstract
Objective: To analyze the association between physical activity level and cardiovascular risk, stratified by sex, in adults with diabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 206 self-reported diabetic adults (aged 20–79), residents of Pomerode, Santa Catarina, participants of the Vida e Saúde em Pomerode Study – SHIP-Brazil. Cardiovascular risk was estimated using the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), considered high when ≥0.90 cm for men and ≥0.85 cm for women. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was assessed using the short version of the IPAQ. The association between insufficient MVPA and elevated WHR was analyzed using Poisson regression, with a significance level of p≤0.05. Results: A significant association was found between insufficient MVPA and elevated WHR in men (p<0.001), even after adjusting for sociodemographic variables, lifestyle, and chronic diseases. Among women, although there was an initial association, it lost significance after adjusting for the number of chronic diseases (p=0.221). Conclusion: Insufficient MVPA is associated with higher cardiovascular risk, as indicated by elevated WHR, particularly in men. Physical activity interventions may help reduce cardiovascular risk in people with diabetes, with attention to sex-specific differences.
