Abstract
Objective: To summarize recent advances related to the role of H. pylori adhesins and their interaction with the human host. Methods: Integrative literature review conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and BVS databases. The DeCS/MeSH descriptors “Helicobacter pylori,” “adhesins,” “outer membrane proteins,” and their alternative terms were used, combined with Boolean operators. Results: After applying eligibility criteria, 21 articles were included. The adhesins BabA, OipA, and SabA were associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. BabA showed variable prevalence (3% to 91.5%). OipA was associated with gastric inflammation, intestinal metaplasia, and a higher disease risk, with prevalence ranging from 34.6% to 100% in the studies. SabA was linked to chronic gastritis and advanced lesions. HopQ, SabB, and AlpA/B were identified as important factors in bacterial adhesion and infection persistence. Final considerations: H. pylori adhesins play a role in colonizing the gastric epithelium and modulating inflammatory responses, making them promising targets for the development of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic strategies. However, the genetic variability of these proteins among strains and populations highlights the need for in vivo and multicenter studies to validate their clinical applicability.
