Abstract
Objective: Present, through a case report, the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of liver cirrhosis due to chronic hepatitis C. Case details: A 61-year-old patient with liver cirrhosis secondary to hepatitis C was admitted with hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, ascites, and urinary tract infection. After being admitted to the intensive care unit and receiving treatment with antibiotics, lactulose, diuretics, albumin, and propranolol, the patient showed progressive improvement in consciousness and renal function, leading to clinical stabilization. The use of lactulose and L-ornithine-L-aspartate was key in controlling the encephalopathy, highlighting the importance of reducing ammonia levels in managing this condition. Final considerations: This case report underscores the complexity of liver cirrhosis, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary management to prevent serious complications and improve prognosis. The treatment partially reversed the symptoms, with successful control of renal function and encephalopathy. Intensive clinical intervention and proper management of comorbidities were crucial for the patient's stabilization and clinical improvement.
