Abstract

Objective: To understand how multidisciplinary approaches can promote patient safety during hospitalization in complex care units. Methods: Study based on an integrative review, involving searches in the MEDLINE, SciELO, and BDENF databases. The descriptors used were "Intensive Care Unit," "Protocols," and "Multidisciplinary Team." Results: Eleven articles were included, addressing safety protocols, organizational culture, and evidence-based practices. The findings indicate that the implementation of institutional protocols, such as care bundles, and the continuous training multidisciplinary teams significantly reduce adverse events, including pressure injuries, infections, and falls. Strategies such as care humanization, multidisciplinary rounds, and continuous monitoring were highlighted as essential for preventing complications. Additionally, the promotion of a non-punitive safety culture that encourages incident reporting was identified as fundamental to the continuous improvement of care processes. Final considerations: It is considered that patient safety in ICUs depends on collaborative efforts, including ongoing training, strengthened communication among teams, and strict adherence to evidence-based protocols. The adoption of integrated and ethical practices contributes to safer hospital environments and to more humanized care, promoting the well-being of patients and their families.
