Abstract

Objective: To evaluate whether vitamin D supplementation is associated with reduced disease activity, improved quality of life, and improved inflammatory markers in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Methods: This systematic review followed the PRISMA criteria and was conducted using the PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, and CAPES databases. The PICO method was used to structure the questions, and the inclusion criteria included studies published in the last 10 years, in Portuguese and English, addressing vitamin D supplementation in patients with SLE. The methodological quality of the clinical trials was assessed using the SLEDAI score. Results: Fourteen studies that met the eligibility criteria were selected. Most studies demonstrated an association between low serum vitamin D levels and increased SLE activity, as determined by the SLEDAI score. Furthermore, cholecalciferol supplementation was associated with improvements in symptoms, disease activity, and quality of life in several studies. Final considerations: Vitamin D supplementation and serum level monitoring appear to be promising strategies for controlling SLE. Although the results are positive, further studies are needed to confirm their effectiveness.
