Abstract

Objective: To report the experience of a child visiting a family member hospitalized in an adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU), exploring their emotional and cognitive aspects. Case details: Approach carried out with a school-age child, together with his/her guardian, before, during and after a visit to a first-degree relative with whom he/she has a significant bond hospitalized in an adult ICU. The participant was assessed for his/her ability to carry out the visit, followed by an initial guided interview with the legal guardian and the child, with the child drawing a picture, monitoring of the bedside visit, a final guided interview with the legal guardian and the child, and the creation of a new picture, and subsequent follow-up by telephone with the guardian 72 hours after the visit. The visit was satisfactory, with two drawings of the nuclear family being produced and the visit approved by those involved. Final considerations: This study highlights the potential benefits of child visits carried out in adult intensive care units, when well planned, prepared and properly monitored, as well as the need to develop the topic, as it is an emerging issue that needs to be expanded to develop resources that ensure a satisfactory visit.
