Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin in the treatment of sialorrhea, considering its mechanisms of action, clinical effects, and limitations reported in the literature. Literature review: Botulinum toxin acts by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine in the salivary glands, resulting in a temporary reduction in saliva production. Studies show its effectiveness in patients with sialorrhea of various etiologies, significantly improving their quality of life. Adverse effects are generally mild and transient, such as dysphagia and xerostomia. However, the need for periodic reapplications, the financial cost of treatment, and variations in individual response are important limitations. Additionally, the application technique and dosage require clinical precision to avoid complications. Final considerations: Botulinum toxin is an effective and safe alternative for the treatment of sialorrhea, although it presents limitations related to the duration of the effect, cost, and the need for professional expertise. Further studies are needed for a better understanding of its long-term use.
