Abstract

Objective: To analyze the effects of a strength training program on the body composition of obese patients awaiting bariatric surgery. Methods: An experimental study was carried out using dual-energy radiological absorptiometry (DXA) measurements to evaluate body composition during a 1-year intervention period. Patients were divided into two groups: one group that received strength training intervention and another group that received only usual medical care. Both groups were followed for one year, while they waited for surgery. Results: In the intervention group, significant reductions (p<0.05) were observed in weight (-14.92kg), body mass index (-5.61kg/m²) and fat percentage (-6.49%) , in addition to maintaining the total android (-1.94kg) and gynoid (-3.98kg) mass. In the control group, no significant changes were observed. Conclusion: The results suggest that strength training intervention can improve body composition in obese patients awaiting bariatric surgery, indicating the feasibility and acceptability of including exercise programs in a multidisciplinary program for these patients.
