Abstract

Objective: Describe the use of bioceramic cements in endodontic obturation. Literature review: The introduction of bioceramics in Endodontics represented an important advance in the execution of complex procedures. The high clinical performance of these materials is due not only to their biocompatibility, but also to their bioactivity due to the release of calcium ions and the formation of apatite-type precipitates when in contact with physiological fluids containing phosphate. This material can serve as a substitute for biological tissue in the periradicular tissue region or be reabsorbed by the tissue and stimulate tissue regeneration and repair. The favorable properties of bioceramic obturation cement, such as hydrophilicity, slight expansion and biocompatibility, allow its use in obturation with the single cone technique, potentially creating a better sealing of the root canals. Conclusion: The results presented so far by laboratory studies demonstrate a satisfactory performance regarding most of the physicochemical and, especially, biological properties of the material, indicating advantages, limitations and future perspectives. However, the research available so far is controversial in clarifying essential topics, such as the effect of heating and the long-term solubility of the material.
