Abstract

Objective: To characterize the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the functional capacity of institutionalized elderly individuals. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study conducted with 204 elderly individuals from a Long-Term Care Facility for the Elderly (LTCF) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Variables such as the Katz Index were used to assess Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL) and the Pfeffer questionnaire to measure Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) during the post-first wave of the pandemic (June to October 2020). Data related to the instruments applied in the pre-pandemic period remained as secondary indicators collected from the elderly individuals' medical records. The data were processed and analyzed using SPSS. Results: The investigation included 153 participants evaluated for BADL and 137 for IADL. Functional decline was observed in participants who presented the symptomatic form of the disease, both in the evaluation for BADL (p=0.010) and IADL (p=0.010). There was also functional worsening with increasing age, for BADL, standing out in the oldest old (p=0.039). Conclusion: The impact of the first wave of the pandemic on the functionality of institutionalized elderly people is relevant when evaluated due to the COVID-19 disease in its symptomatic form in addition to the consequences of the necessary social restriction measures.
