Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of tooth whitening in primary teeth and its aesthetic and clinical implications in pediatric dentistry. Literature review: The literature review revealed that tooth whitening in primary teeth, although still underexplored scientifically, has shown significant aesthetic effectiveness, especially in cases of discoloration caused by trauma. Both exogenous and endogenous techniques, using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, have proven to be safe when applied by trained professionals who respect the structural particularities of primary teeth. Despite possible changes in enamel microhardness, no permanent damage has been identified when appropriate protocols are followed. Furthermore, the literature points to positive impacts on children’s self-esteem, with strong support from parents and professionals regarding the importance of oral aesthetics during childhood. Final considerations: The study highlights tooth whitening as an effective and safe aesthetic option for primary teeth, with a positive impact on children’s self-esteem. However, limitations include the scarcity of data on long-term effects and the need for caution due to the lower mineralization of these teeth.
