Abstract

Objective: To report the application of a systematic dental protocol in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), highlighting its impact on interdisciplinary care and academic training. Experience report: Given the complexity in dental care for patients with RA, an extension activity was conducted resulting in the application of a structured protocol. The protocol included detailed medical history, clinical examination of the stomatognathic system, periodontal assessment using a computerized probe, saliva and gingival crevicular fluid collection, as well as validated questionnaires. This systematic approach enabled the identification of oral changes, such as gingival inflammation, chronic periodontitis, and salivary alterations—factors that can directly affect the response to medical treatment. Final considerations: The application of the dental protocol proved potentially effective for early diagnosis of oral manifestations of RA, also contributing to the reduction of systemic complications and healthcare costs. Besides directly benefiting patients, the experience enhanced postgraduate training by promoting a humanized approach and strengthening the integration between education and healthcare services, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinarity and extension practices in comprehensive care within Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS).
