Abstract

Objective: To analyze the phytochemical profile of essential oils from plants of the genus Cinnamomum and their effects on systemic and tissue inflammatory parameters in animals with intestinal mucositis induced by 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU). Methods: The intestinal mucositis model induced by 5-FU in mice was used, which were subjected to biochemical, immunological, histopathological and morphometric analyses to test the effect of co-treatment with essential oils of Cinnamomum cassia Blume (OCC) and essential oil of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume (OCZ), which were characterized by Gas Chromatography Coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: GC-MS identified a distinct qualitative and quantitative composition, with both oils containing approximately 80% cinnamaldehyde. In terms of efficacy, OCC oil reduced intestinal architectural loss at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg, while OCZ was effective only at 50 mg/kg. Additionally, both oils reduced serum C-reactive protein levels. Both also showed beneficial effects against 5-FU-induced leukopenia and reduced tissue myeloperoxidase. in the small intestine of animals with 5-FU-induced mucositis. Conclusion: Our findings postulate that volatile derivatives of the genus Cinnamomum hold promising potential against inflammatory events such as 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis.
