Abstract

Objective: To investigate the knowledge and practices of pregnant and lactating women in Picos, Piauí, related to breastfeeding. Methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative study conducted with pregnant and lactating women attending a Basic Health Unit (BHU) in Picos, Piauí, who were administered a questionnaire on socioeconomic aspects, theoretical knowledge and practices related to breastfeeding. Results: Most interviewees received information about breastfeeding during pregnancy (68.7%), mainly at the BHU (93.2%) and from nursing professionals (75%). Most of them knew that breastfeeding should begin within the first hour of life (87.5%) and that exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for 6 months (67.1%). Approximately 42.2% of the participants breastfed during the study period, with 44.4% of them exclusively breastfeeding. The introduction of other foods before six months was influenced mainly by the mothers' own initiative (60%). All began breastfeeding in the hospital (100%), with help with the first feeding being provided mainly by family members (55.6%). Conclusion: Most of the interviewees confirmed the importance of breastfeeding, but some of them still lack adequate information, highlighting the need for reinforced health education.
