Abstract

Objective: To analyze how the population's knowledge about the functioning and structure of health systems influences access to and organization of services. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. The bibliographic search was conducted from April to May 2025 in the following databases: National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and the Virtual Health Library (BVS). After search and analysis, 18 articles were selected. Results: It was observed that social determinants and the proper use of health services are strongly correlated. Individuals with higher health literacy showed better treatment adherence, clinical understanding, and navigation within health systems. Additionally, there was a reduction in low-complexity visits and an improvement in the problem-solving capacity of the Health Care Network. Digital literacy also played a key role in user autonomy, especially in managing chronic diseases. Final considerations: Health literacy contributes to adequate access, better organization, and efficiency of health services by facilitating navigation through the network and reducing service overload. Investing in educational policies and actions focused on health literacy is essential to promote equity, quality of care, and better health system management.
