Abstract

Objective: To identify and analyze prognostic factors associated with the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods: This is an integrative review in which data were collected from online databases, including Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline/PubMed), and the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS). The search was conducted using specific descriptors combined with the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR.” Results: A total of 328 articles were identified. After initial screening by titles and abstracts, 56 articles were selected for full-text reading. In the end, 19 publications met the inclusion criteria and formed the basis of the present analysis. Final considerations: Further research is essential to gain a deeper understanding of the factors associated with DR and its progression. Identifying effective strategies to slow the advancement of the disease and prevent vision loss in diabetic patients with or without an existing diagnosis of retinopathy is crucial for preserving visual function and improving quality of life in individuals with diabetes mellitus.
