Abstract

Objective: To update the scientific community on the use of laser therapy in the treatment of oral mucositis, highlighting its benefits, limitations, and impact on the quality of life of oncology patients. Methods: A qualitative research was conducted based on sampling, utilizing databases such as PubMed, Medline, BBO, Lilacs, Scopus, Cochrane, BVS, and SciELO. The descriptors included "low-level light therapy", "oral mucositis", "chemotherapy", "radiotherapy", and "cancer", covering articles indexed between 2009 and 2025. Languages: English, Portuguese, and Spanish. The selection of studies was conducted by two researchers, with the assistance of two more in case of divergence, in addition to a reviewer. Results: A total of 15 articles were analyzed, comprising 13 in Portuguese, 1 in English, and 1 in Spanish, including literature reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, case reports, and clinical trials. Final considerations: Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an effective, safe, and highly valuable therapeutic intervention in the management of oral mucositis in cancer patients. On the other hand, the main limitation identified does not lie in the efficacy of the therapy itself, but in the pronounced heterogeneity of the application protocols in the literature, which presents the biggest current challenge for its universalization and standardization.
