Abstract

Objective: To analyze the impacts of extreme poverty on cognitive development in early childhood, considering the importance of this stage for acquiring cognitive, social, and emotional skills. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. Six studies were selected through searches in scientific databases, using previously defined inclusion criteria, focusing on research that links extreme poverty conditions to impairments in children's cognitive development. Results: The reviewed studies revealed that factors such as food insecurity, low caregiver education, lack of basic sanitation, inadequate housing, and deprivation of adequate stimuli are associated with cognitive delays, learning difficulties, and impairments in executive functions. Additionally, the studies highlighted that interventions such as social programs, home visits, strengthening family bonds, and intersectoral actions can significantly reduce these effects. Final considerations: It is concluded that extreme poverty has a significant negative impact on cognitive development in early childhood. Therefore, well-structured public policies that ensure access to basic living conditions and early stimulation are essential to mitigate these impacts and break the intergenerational cycle of poverty.
