Abstract

Objective: To present the results of a study conducted in the state of Paraná to estimate the prevalence of syphilis among postpartum women, assess knowledge about the infection, and analyze epidemiological data. Methods: This is a multicenter, observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study with prospective data collection. Fourteen maternity hospitals from eleven municipalities were randomly selected by drawing lots. A questionnaire was applied to assess knowledge about syphilis and collect epidemiological information. Blood samples were collected for syphilis diagnostic testing (ST). Results: A total of 1,364 postpartum women were included, of whom 94 were diagnosed with syphilis, corresponding to a prevalence of 6.9%. Women diagnosed with syphilis demonstrated a higher level of knowledge regarding transmission and latency compared to non-reactive participants, as well as a higher educational level. Conclusion: The observed prevalence of syphilis (6.9%) was more than double the estimate reported by the Ministry of Health in the Epidemiological Bulletin published in October 2024 (3.05%).
