Abstract

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile and compare the efficiency of videolaryngoscopy (VL) versus direct laryngoscopy (DL) in patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery at the Francisca Mendes University Hospital in Manaus. Methods: Data were collected from 100 patients, including sex, age, body mass index (BMI), presence of comorbidities (hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, heart failure), and type of surgery. Results: A predominance of male patients (74%) was observed, with a high prevalence of hypertension (87%) and diabetes (47%). Additionally, 45% of patients had a mentonian distance of less than 6 cm, which increases intubation difficulty, combined with the fact that most patients had Mallampati class III or IV, indicating greater anatomical complexity. VL achieved a 100% success rate on the first attempt and a shorter average intubation time (28 seconds) compared to DL (96% success; 80 seconds). Conclusion: VL proved to be more effective and safer, especially in high-risk patients such as those undergoing cardiac surgery.
