Abstract
Objective: To assess the nutritional status and functional capacity of hospitalized cancer patients in a referral hospital. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving cancer patients hospitalized between June and November 2024. Clinical and anthropometric variables, cancer cachexia stages, performance status, and blood glucose levels were evaluated. Results: The sample included 48 patients, with a mean age of 56.6 years (±13.4); most were female (68.8%) and had tumors located in the reproductive system (39.6%) at stage III of the disease, indicating an advanced cancer stage. Regarding nutritional status, based on Body Mass Index (BMI), 25% were underweight or malnourished, 35.4% showed impaired functional capacity, and 75% were diagnosed with cachexia. A negative correlation was found between (BMI) and cachexia stages (r = -0.304; p= 0.036), and a positive correlation between weight loss and cachexia stages (r= 0.702; p< 0.001). Conclusion: Cachexia is a significant complication in cancer patients, highlighting the need for an integrated approach that considers both nutritional and functional aspects to prevent or manage functional decline.
