Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the effects of a smoking cessation program with physical activity on the quality of life, anxiety, and depression of smokers. Methods: A randomized clinical trial in which the sample was divided into: an incentive group with step/day goals (G1), an incentive group with step/day goals and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise/day (G2), and a control group (CG). The CG received only cognitive behavioral therapy and medication, while G1 and G2 received physical activity incentive goals in addition to these. Fagerström test, SF-36, IDATE, Beck's Inventory, oximetry, spirometry, and pedometry were collected at baseline and at the final moment (3 months of cessation). Results: 29 smokers analyzed: G1 (n=11), G2 (n=10), and GC (n=8). In the characterization of the sample, the groups did not differ statistically. Differences were observed in the time effect on all analyzed variables, demonstrating a decline in quality of life (p=0.019), worsening of depression (p=0.015), trait anxiety (p=0.007), and improvement in anxiety state (p=0.006). Conclusion: The smoking cessation program with physical activity did not show superiority over the usual cessation program in the variables of quality of life, anxiety, and depression of smokers.
