Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of dizziness among older adults enrolled in the Family Health Strategy (FHS). Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted with 391 older adults enrolled in the FHS of a municipality in northwestern Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected between June and November 2021 using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Dizziness Handicap Inventory. Descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation coefficient were used, with a significance level of 5%. Results: Among younger older adults, the prevalence of dizziness was 44%, and among those aged 80 and over, it was 55.9%. There was a higher percentage of dizziness among younger women (50%) than among those aged 80 and over (61.4%). Of older men under 80, 32.4% had dizziness, and of those aged 80 and over, 45.8% had the disorder. Conclusion: The prevalence of dizziness is significant in the elderly population and is commonly associated with other pathologies. Self-reported dizziness is an important screening question, enabling the identification of elderly individuals at risk for adverse events, such as falls, and determining interventions that lead to the prevention of health problems.
