Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to map the international scientific production on risk factors for surgical site infection in elderly patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Methods: This is a bibliometric analysis based on articles available in the Web of Science and Scopus databases, with no time or language restrictions. The search terms were selected from DeCS/MeSH descriptors: Aged, Surgical Wound Infection, Cardiac Surgery, and Hospitalization. Data were extracted and analyzed using R® and RStudio® software, with the Bibliometrix package. Information on authorship, journals, average citations, institutions, and keywords was collected. Results: A total of 175 articles published between 1987 and 2024 were identified, distributed across 150 journals and produced by 1,089 authors affiliated with 314 institutions from 31 countries. The United States stood out with the highest number of publications and citations. The most frequently used keywords included: female, male, aged, adult, human, hospitalization, surgery, infection, sternotomy, treatment, and cardiac surgery. The data reveal the current landscape of scientific production and highlight knowledge gaps. Final considerations: It can be considered that there is a need to expand the discussion on the topic and encourage new investigations with varied methodological approaches in order to deepen the understanding of the risk factors involved.
