Abstract

Objective: To assess the work environment and depression levels among nursing professionals in a public hospital in the Northeast region of Brazil during the pandemic period. Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted with 38 nurses and 12 nursing technicians working in a public hospital in Piauí, Brazil. Data collection took place in 2020 using validated instruments, such as the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Nursing Work Index. Data were analyzed with Excel® and R software, using descriptive and nonparametric analyses, including the Mann-Whitney test, chi-square test, Friedman test, and Spearman’s rank correlation. Results: Most participants were female (94%), aged between 20 and 40 years. Many had not received adequate training on COVID-19 care and felt insecure (68%). Regarding depression levels, 62% of professionals presented mild depression and 4% severe depression. A significant correlation was observed between lack of training, inadequate work environment conditions, and the development of depressive symptoms. Conclusion: Lack of training and inadequate work environment conditions significantly contributed to the development of depression among nursing professionals.
