Abstract

Objective: To analyze the efficacy of sentinel lymph node (SLN) treatment in women diagnosed with early-stage vulvar cancer (VC). Methods: A systematic review of the scientific literature with a meta-analytic study was conducted and previously registered in PROPERO. A guiding question was formulated following the acronym PICO. The search and preliminary screening strategy were conducted in four databases: Embase, the Cochrane Library, Medline, and BVS. The selection criteria were observational studies that evaluated the efficacy of the SLN technique in increasing disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) of patients with early-stage VC compared with inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy (IFL). For data collection and analysis, two authors independently selected the studies, assessed the risk of bias, and extracted the data. After the meta-analysis, an analysis of the certainty of the evidence was performed. Results: Our electronic search data yielded 3,821 studies. Forty-two duplicates were excluded, leaving 3,779 studies for screening, four of which were included in the meta-analysis. Conclusion: The LS technique is comparable to the LFI technique in DFS and OS outcomes. These findings have important implications for clinical practice, as they offer a safe, evidence-based therapeutic option.
