Abstract
Objective:To analyze the epidemiological profile of chikungunyavirus infection in Brazil from 2019 to 2023. Methods: This study presents a descriptive, retrospective, longitudinal, and quantitative epidemiological analysis of chikungunya cases in Brazil. Secondary data were obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN), available through the Department of Information Technology of the Unified Health System (DATASUS).Results: From 2019 to 2023, Brazil confirmed 793,929 cases of chikungunya (85.2% of reported cases), with the highest incidence observed in 2022 (127.23 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The average case fatality rate was 0.0376%, with 381 deaths attributed to the disease. The Northeast region accounted for 53.2% of confirmed cases, followed by the Southeast region with 36.0%. The most affected population profile included women (59.9%), adults aged 20–39 years (35.1%), and individuals of mixed race/color (55.2%).Conclusion: The findings highlight the need for active epidemiological surveillance of chikungunya in Brazil, particularly through targeted control of infection hotspots and risk populations, in order to reduce incidence and chikungunya-related mortality.
