Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the extent of medical referral of oncology patients undergoing treatment with antiresorptive drugs for prior and ongoing dental follow-up, with the aim of preventing medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ), as well as to assess whether these patients were adequately informed about the potential side effects and associated risk factors of the medication. Methods: This cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted at the reference hospital for cancer treatmentwith a sample of 70 patients receiving zoledronic acid (Zometa®). Data were collected through structured interviews using a multiple-choice questionnaire. Responses were entered into the Google Forms platform to calculate percentage distributions. Results: The majority of participants (85.5%) were not referred for a dental consultation prior to initiating treatment with zoledronic acid. Additionally, 22.8% were referred during the course of treatment, and 72.1% reported receiving no information regarding potential side effects. Conclusion: The findings underscore the need to strengthen collaboration between medical and dental care teams and to enhance patient education regarding preventive measures and the adverse effects associated with antiresorptive therapy.
