Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association between sleep quality and common mental disorders, socioeconomic factors, social support, discrimination, and factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic among in-person university students. Methods: Data collection was conducted online between November 2020 and January 2021, with 1,132 eligible participants. Sleep quality was assessed using the Mini Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ). Bivariate statistical analysis used a 5% significance level, and factors with significant associations were included in the multivariate analysis. Results: “Severe difficulty” in sleep was observed in 68.8% of students. Factors associated with poor sleep quality included discrimination at the university, depressive symptoms, and suicide risk. Protective factors were medium/high social support, lower social isolation, and sleep having improved or remained stable during the pandemic. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of monitoring and interventions aimed at mental health and academic well-being, contributing to improved sleep quality and, consequently, the overall health of undergraduates.
