Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the use of a gamified educational technology for controlling interdialytic weight gain (IWG) in children and adolescents undergoing hemodialysis at a nephropediatrics service in the Amazon. Methods: A quantitative field study conducted in a public hospital in Northern Brazil, with the participation of children, adolescents on hemodialysis, and their caregivers. The game was applied for four weeks, associated with dry weight monitoring. Sociodemographic, clinical, and pre- and post-intervention knowledge data were collected and analyzed through descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results: Before the intervention, there was a knowledge deficit about dry weight and IWG, in addition to poor fluid control, with 60% presenting IWG above 5%. After the game intervention, 80% of patients and 90% of caregivers understood essential treatment concepts, and 60% of patients began to control fluid intake. A reduction in IWG was observed, remaining mostly below 5% of dry weight. Conclusion: The gamified technology was effective in expanding knowledge, promoting engagement, self-care adherence, and family participation, contributing to clinical safety, treatment adherence, and quality of life. It is a low-cost tool, applicable across SUS contexts and aligned with the SDGs.
