Abstract

Objective: To analyze the perception of health science students on the relationship between alcohol and other drug use and the university context. Methods: This was a qualitative study conducted with 103 students from a public university in the interior of Paraná. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews between January and April 2023, focusing on the mental health challenges and protective factors for university students. The study was approved by a Research Ethics Committee. Results: 77.4% of participants reported substance use, and 70.1% perceived a connection to the university context. The increase in consumption was related to moments of stress, exams, and parties. Students indicated that alcohol use facilitates socialization and acts as a coping mechanism for academic pressure. Stress was identified as a factor for substance use, which led to a reduction in academic performance. University parties were mentioned as a space where alcohol and drug use is socially encouraged. Conclusion: University students perceive a strong relationship between the consumption of alcohol and other drugs and the university context. The increase in consumption was directly associated with entering the university.
