Abstract

Objective: To analyze the experiences and coping strategies related to grief among healthcare professionals working in multiprofessional teams in the Adult Oncology sector of public and private hospitals in Pernambuco, following patient loss. Methods: A qualitative study with virtual data collection through snowball sampling and online dissemination. A sociodemographic questionnaire (28 respondents) and remote semi-structured interviews (13 participants) were conducted. Content analysis followed Minayo MCS (2001), with Stroebe M e Schut H’s Dual Process Model of Grief (1999) as the theoretical framework. Ethics approval: CAAE nº 82518324.8.0000.5569. Results: Sociodemographic profile: mean age 33 years, predominantly women (85%) and Catholic (50%); main professional areas: Nursing and Psychology. Three categories emerged from the qualitative analysis: Category I: Factors influencing healthcare professionals’ experiences of grief in oncology; Category II: Coping strategies for grief among healthcare professionals; Category III: Caring for the caregivers: limits and possibilities of support for healthcare professionals’ grief. Conclusion: Grief among healthcare professionals is multifactorial, underscoring the need for institutional interventions aimed at emotional support and strengthening mental health within teams. Limitations: Low participation from some health areas and from male professionals, with a restricted sample reach.
