Abstract

Objective: To investigate the knowledge, perceptions, and practices of primary care physicians and nurses, regarding breastfeeding management, identifying weaknesses and strengths in the support offered to nursing mothers. Methods: This exploratory, qualitative, descriptive study involved 36 health professionals from primary care units. Results: Quantitative analysis revealed that only 63.9% reported using counseling techniques, while some were unfamiliar or unable to apply them. Qualitative analysis highlighted weaknesses in four dimensions: limited use of dialogical counseling techniques, heterogeneous guidelines for pain and fissures, unclear criteria for identifying successful breastfeeding, and consensus on the need for practical training and support materials. Conclusion: The study indicates that the challenges in managing breastfeeding by health professionals are related to training gaps and insufficient contextualized educational tools, thus requiring the strengthening of continuing education and the adoption of resources that bring theory and practice closer together.
