Abstract
Objective: To identify the prevalence of tobacco product consumption and associated sociodemographic factors among high school adolescents in a border city in western Paraná. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with high school adolescents from public institutions in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, Brazil. Data collection was carried out through the application of a printed questionnaire based on the National Youth Tobacco Survey 2022 Questionnaire. Results: There were 296 adolescents, of which 51.0% consumed hookah (95% CI: 45.3%-56.7%), 49.7% used electronic cigarettes (95% CI: 44.0%-55.4%) and 23.6% reported consuming traditional cigarettes (95% CI: (18.8%, 28.5%). A statistically significant association was identified between the consumption of electronic cigarettes (p=0.0448) and hookah (p=0.0106) among adolescents aged 16 to 18 years, as well as a relationship between hookah use and marital status, with a higher prevalence among those in a relationship (p=0.0092). Conclusion: There was a significant decrease in the use of traditional cigarettes among adolescents in relation to the new tobacco consumption products hookah and electronic cigarettes.
