Abstract

Objective: To study the administration of atorvastatin on oral mucositis (OM), evaluating dosage, clinical status of the animals, maintenance of the leukocyte number and cachexia in a model of MO chemoinduced by the chemotherapy drug 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU). Methods: Thirty six wistar rats were divided into Control Group (CG): 5-FU + 0.9% Saline Solution; Group I (GI): 5-FU + 1mg of atorvastatin; Group II (GII): 5-FU + 5mg of atorvastatin and Group III (GIII): 5-FU + 10mg of atorvastatin. Results: Through histological analyzes, CG showed loss of lining epithelium; GI maintained the integrity of the lining epithelium, but thinner; GII presented the preserved lining epithelium and Group III maintained the thick lining epithelium. Global leukocyte count: CG was considered high; GI showed low counts; GII showed a decrease, and GIII maintained a leukogram within normal values. After induction of MO, intense cachexia and weight loss were observed in the CG; GI cachexia was less pronounced; and cachexia and weight loss were observed in Groups II and III, but this improved more rapidly, with a tendency toward weight gain. Conclusión: The preventive potential of atorvastatin in wistar rats was defined as a preventive and safer dose of 10 mg/kg/day.
