Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the clinical-nutritional evolution and costs associated with the use of parenteral nutrition by hospitalized patients. Methods: The study was carried out in three public hospitals, including patients ≥ 19 years old, of both genders; sociodemographic, nutritional, clinical data and costs of parenteral nutrition therapy were collected. Results: Seventy-three patients were included, (69.9%) elderly, (59%) male. There was no difference in length of hospital stay between patients using individualized parenteral nutrition (IPN) and ready-to-use (UPN). Patients on individualized parenteral nutrition had a higher percentage of hospital discharge. The achievement of caloric needs was similar between groups, protein was lower in the UPN group (68%). There was no difference in the occurrence of catheter-related infection. Among the most significant biochemical changes were hypertriglyceridemia and electrolyte changes. The cost was higher for IPN (R$ 463.84) vs. (UPN R$ 342.93), p<0.05. Conclusion: Depending on the criteria, one type presents advantages over another. It is important to know the space that each parenteral nutrition occupies. The results should be interpreted cautiously due to limitations, including protocol weaknesses. We suggest that institutions invest in studies of this nature, which guide care in a global manner, aiming at benefits for patients, professionals and institutions.
