Abstract

Objective: To report the experience of a nurse working on a Hospital Infection Control Committee with the transition from manual to digital records for epidemiological surveillance of colonization by multidrug-resistant microorganisms in patients at risk for healthcare-associated infections. Experience report: Initially, it was observed that the committee's files and records, including notifications of colonization by multidrug-resistant microorganisms, were mostly handwritten and filed in printed format, despite the gradual computerization that began in 2024. During the intervention, a standard operating procedure was implemented for the systematic collection of nasal and rectal swabs from patients in intensive care, transferred from other institutions, or hospitalized for more than seven days. All screening results were entered into Excel® spreadsheets. After eight months, retrospective monitoring of these records showed that the most prevalent microorganisms in routine surveillance included: Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae; Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus; Pseudomonas aeruginosa and resistant variants; methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; and Acinetobacter baumannii. Final considerations: The implementation of systematic swab collection screening combined with the digitization of records has proven to be an effective strategy for early case identification, outbreak prevention, continuous process improvement, and strengthening of patient safety.
