Abstract
Objective: To describe the adaptation problems of patients with diabetes mellitus and their coping strategies, reflecting on Roy's adaptive model. Methods: This integrative literature review was conducted from November to December 2024, using the MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, and SCOPUS databases. The authors analyzed articles published in the last five years, using the descriptors “adaptation”; “complications”; “diabetes mellitus”; “difficulties”, and the Boolean operators ‘and’ and ‘or’ to cross-reference these. Results: The final sample consisted of 11 articles, which culminated in two categories entitled: "Complications of diabetes mellitus and their relationship with Roy's adaptive model" and "Coping strategies in the process of adapting to diabetes mellitus." Final considerations: This study fulfills the proposed objectives by elucidating the importance of using Roy's Theory to understand the adaptive problems and coping strategies that surround the patient with diabetes, providing a vision beyond the physiological/pathological mechanism and alerting to the need for qualified active listening and comprehensive support to the patient in their psychosocial-spiritual sphere.
