Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge and applicability of the lingual frenulum assessment protocol in neonates, known as the "Tongue-Tie Test," among healthcare professionals working in a medium-sized public maternity hospital in Southwest Bahia. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study, conducted through a questionnaire applied in the maternity ward of the aforementioned hospital, focusing on the applicability of the protocol in newborns. The “Tongue-tie Test,” used as a screening tool, aims to standardize the diagnosis of ankyloglossia and can be performed within the first days of a newborn’s life, enabling early interventions. Results: Most professionals do not perform the test on neonates and show limited knowledge of the protocol, indicating a clear need for training. Many reported a lack of specific training and the absence of institutional protocols in routine hospital practice. Conclusion: Although professionals claim to be familiar with the "Tongue-tie Test," they do not apply it systematically, often relying on subjective methods without the support of a standardized protocol. This highlights the importance of ongoing professional training and the integration of the protocol into clinical practice in maternity wards.
