Abstract
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of cognitive impairment in people aged 60 and over using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores assessed by percentiles. Methods: We used data from the “Study of Health in Pomerode - SHIP-Brazil” collected between 2014 and 2018. An adapted version of MMSE was applied to participants aged 60 and over living in Pomerode, Santa Catarina. Results: Among the 733 SHIP-Brazil participants, 502 were included in the analysis. The median score for participants aged 60-69 with zero to four years of schooling was 23 points and those with five years or more was 25 points. For participants aged between 70 and 79 with zero to four years of schooling was 22 points and for those with five years or more of schooling was 26 points. The 5th percentile estimated cut-off points of 15/16 for elderly people with zero to four years of schooling and cut-off points of 18/20 for elderly people with five years of schooling or more. Conclusion: The 5th percentile proposed in this study identified 14.3% of cognitive impairment in our sample.
