Abstract

Objective: To analyze the clinical and epidemiological profile of elderly patients who died due to femoral fracture in the state of Maranhão, from 2015 to 2024. Methods: This is an epidemiological, documentary, quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective study. Data were obtained from the Hospital Information System (SIH), considering variables such as sex, age group, race/color, length of hospital stay, and hospital costs. Results: A progressive increase in hospitalizations due to femoral fractures among the elderly in Maranhão was observed, with predominance in females, individuals over 80 years old, and those of mixed race. Mortality was higher among men, despite a lower absolute number of cases, suggesting biological and healthcare-related differences. The mean hospital stay was 10.3 days, and hospital costs were high, reflecting the clinical complexity and economic burden of these admissions. Conclusion: Femoral fractures in elderly patients in Maranhão are characterized by high mortality and significant hospital costs, highlighting the need for preventive strategies, timely treatment, and regional public policies to improve clinical outcomes.
