Abstract
Objective: To identify the main risk factors associated with the occurrence of pharyngotonsillitis in young adults, considering history of infections, previous treatments, and lifestyle habits. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional study conducted with 102 young adults from different university programs in the city of Guarapuava, Paraná. A structured questionnaire based on the Paradise criteria was administered, addressing sex, age, frequency of episodes, type of treatment, alcohol and tobacco consumption, and impacts on daily activities. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with calculation of absolute and relative frequencies. Results: Most participants were female (66.7%) and between 21 and 25 years old (47%). Approximately 36% reported a diagnosis of pharyngotonsillitis in the last three years, with the most common treatment being anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics, such as amoxicillin with clavulanate and azithromycin. It was observed that 20.6% were smokers and 73.5% consumed alcoholic beverages. Conclusion: Pharyngotonsillitis in young adults was associated with inappropriate antibiotic use and risky habits, such as smoking and alcohol consumption, highlighting the importance of preventive measures and rational management of the disease.
