Abstract

Objective: To establish the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the development of renal and cardiac complications, and pathophysiology. Methods: This is an integrative review of the scientific literature, conducted through searches in major databases using Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) in Portuguese and English, namely: “diabetes mellitus tipo 2,” “complicações renais,” “complicações cardíacas,” “hiperglicemia,” as well as in English: "Type 2 diabetes mellitus," "renal complications," "cardiac complications," "hyperglycemia." Scientific studies published between 2014 and 2024, available in full text in Portuguese and English, were included. The guiding question used was: What is the relationship between chronic renal and cardiac complications, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and pathophysiology? Results: A total of 62 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, showing the relationship between T2DM and chronic renal and cardiac complications. Final considerations: T2DM is associated with the development of chronic renal and cardiac complications. Renal dysfunction worsens diabetic cardiomyopathy.
