Abstract

Objective: To identify and characterize the dietary habits of pregnant women living in the urban area of Santarém (PA), highlighting consumption patterns associated with mercury exposure during pregnancy. Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study conducted in 2024 with 65 pregnant women aged 18 to 42 years from Basic Health Units (UBS) in the urban area of Santarém, Pará. A structured questionnaire was applied addressing sociodemographic characteristics, health conditions, and eating habits. Venous blood and hair samples were also collected to determine total mercury (THg). Methylmercury (MeHg) intake was estimated based on the frequency and quantity of fish consumed. Results: Pregnant women in the first trimester showed the highest THg levels, with 43% in high exposure. The amount of carnivorous fish and the variety of non-carnivorous fish were correlated with THg levels in the second trimester. A positive correlation was observed between estimated MeHg intake and THg levels in blood and hair. Conclusion: THg levels exceeded the recommended limits, especially in the first trimester, a critical period for fetal development.
